Past Group Exhibition – ‘from Giyani To Alexandra – The Journey Continues’ By Phillemon Hlungwani
Phillemon Hlungwani is one of South Africa’s most celebrated and sought after artists with burgeoning international reputation which is unusual for such a comparatively young artist.
He has been working for the last two years on an extraordinary body of work which will open as two mirror image exhibitions at The Gallery at Grande Provence in Franschhoek and at Circa in Johannesburg.
The exhibition consists of monumental charcoal and pastel drawings and a series of etchings. The subject matter is of the people and landscape of his village and that of Alexandra Township where he moved as a young adult.
This is an exceptionally powerful and beautiful exhibition by perhaps our finest draughtsman ever.
The exhibition is curated by Trent Read.
